MARKETING RESEARCH PROCESS:Why and how to conduct a marketing research

If you want to start your own business and sell your own products or services, you need to know what people want and how much they’re willing to pay for it. Marketing research can give you all of that valuable information—it’s one of the most important steps in the process of starting a business. From conducting an initial market research before even coming up with an idea, to getting feedback on what you already have on the market, learning how to conduct a marketing research is essential to your success as an entrepreneur.

Why is Market Research Important?

Market research is important because it helps you see where your business fits in your target market and how to position yourself. If your target market has a need or demand that isn’t being met, marketing research can tell you whether or not there’s an opportunity in that space. Market research can also help inform what products or services you should create, which will directly affect how much money your business makes. It’s easy for businesses with great ideas but poor marketing strategies (or no strategy at all) to fail quickly. Market research tells you if people are interested in what you have to offer and how they want it delivered—and thus how you should position your product in their minds. What Type of Market Research Should You Do?: There are two main types of market research: primary and secondary. Primary research consists of information collected from potential customers who fit your target demographic; secondary research refers to data from third-party sources like industry reports, surveys, etc. Primary research is typically more useful because it gives you first-hand knowledge about what people want/need. However, primary research takes time and resources that many small businesses don't have access to. Luckily, secondary data can be just as useful if not more so than primary research.  Marketing research doesn’t just tell you how to move forward; it affects every decision you make during your startup phase. Deciding on pricing, branding, messaging—even deciding on one idea over another —can all be affected by marketing research. For example, say you find out through market research that consumers would rather pay $60 for a subscription box service than $105; suddenly, pivoting your idea becomes easier and more likely.

So why should you conduct a marketing research?

The key to keeping up with your competitors is knowing exactly what your customers think of you and your business. It’s especially important to understand what they think about you if you are entering a new market and have no current customer base. By conducting marketing research, you will be able to gauge how strong your brand image is and whether it needs work.

Also, you will learn which aspects of your product or service need improvement. If that weren’t enough reason to do marketing research, it can also help you identify ways to improve profitability because it provides valuable insights into consumer buying habits and preferences.

Market research also helps companies understand who their target audience is and why people buy certain products and services. This type of knowledge helps businesses improve existing products and services as well as create new ones.

What are the Different Types of Market Research?

There are many different types of marketing research that can be used depending on the problem you’re trying to solve. For example, there are qualitative and quantitative approaches, primary and secondary research, and market segmentation studies. Each of these comes with its own list of advantages, as well as limitations. It’s important that you make the distinction between each type of research in order to figure out which one is best suited for your problem at hand. The bottom line: not all marketing research is created equal. To determine what type of marketing research is right for you, consider what makes them unique. What are their pros and cons? What factors should I consider when deciding between a primary or secondary study? How do I know if a survey will work better than an interview? These questions will help guide your decision-making process. In addition to knowing how to distinguish between various types of marketing research, it’s also helpful to understand why they matter. Why does it matter whether you conduct primary or secondary research? Why does it matter whether you conduct qualitative or quantitative studies? And why does it matter whether you focus on data from surveys versus interviews? At times, it may seem like marketers use every type of marketing research under the sun—and in some cases, they do. But certain methods are more useful than others depending on why you’re conducting your research in the first place.

When Should You Start Doing Market Research?

You should start a marketing research as soon as you get an idea for a new business. The earlier, the better because you’ll save money by having more time to make adjustments and improve your product or service before launch. As an example, let’s say you want to open a dog-grooming shop, but you don’t really know how to groom dogs yourself. Before you spend any money on equipment or rent space, do some market research to find out if there are enough customers in your area who would pay for grooming services. If not, then maybe it’s not such a good idea after all. Market research can help you avoid costly mistakes like these—and it will give you valuable information about what works (and what doesn’t) in your industry. It’s also important to keep in mind that while you might be able to conduct much of your own market research, sometimes hiring a professional is necessary. For example, if you need specialized knowledge or skills that you don’t have access to (e.g., marketing expertise), then hiring someone with those skills is probably worth it. And when it comes to market research, many companies offer free samples of their products or services so you can test them out and see if they work for your business. For example, if you’re thinking about opening a restaurant, one way to test demand is by giving away food samples at local events.

Where Can You Get the Data From?

You can get marketing research data from your current customers by asking them questions, either in person or via an online survey tool. You can also gather information from non-customers using social media and other channels.

What Kind of Information Should You Gather in Market Research?

Conducting marketing research is not just about asking customers what they want. It’s also about figuring out how you can deliver it, or even how you can provide them with a product that exceeds their expectations. So it is important to know what kind of information you should gather when conducting market research for your business. The following are some basic questions you need to ask yourself:

What do I already know?

What questions do I have?

Who do I need to speak with?

How will I find out what I need to know?

What am I trying to learn from my research?

Steps for Doing Effective Market Research

As a business owner, you understand your target market very well. Your clients have told you what they want and it’s your job to listen. But are you listening? And if so, how do you know if what they’re telling you is indeed what they want? The best way is by conducting marketing research that can tell you exactly who your target market is and why they should be buying from you over everyone else in their market. If you don’t conduct any marketing research, then there is no way of knowing whether or not what you think your customers want is actually what they want. It could be completely off base! So why not get ahead of things by doing some good old-fashioned market research? Here are some tips on how to conduct successful marketing research

 1) Ask Questions – You need to ask questions that will help you determine why people buy from one company over another. For example, why did someone choose your product instead of a competitor’s product? What did they like about yours more than theirs? These are just two examples of questions you need to ask during your marketing research project. You may even find out something about yourself as an entrepreneur: Are you providing what people really want or just what you think they want?

(2) Use Focus Groups – One of the best ways to conduct marketing research is through focus groups. This allows you to talk with real people and hear them explain why they make certain purchasing decisions.

(3) Do Surveys – Another great method for gathering information about why consumers buy from certain companies over others is through surveys. 4) Take Notes – Don’t forget to take notes when conducting marketing research. This will allow you to look back at all of your findings later on down the road and refer back to them if necessary.

5)Ask Why Again – After completing all of your marketing research, go back and look at all of your findings again before making any final conclusions.

Remember why you wanted to conduct marketing research in the first place? It was because you wanted to see why people were choosing your competitors over you. Now that you have all of your answers, try asking why again. Why would someone choose your company’s products or services over a competitor?

6) Be Open Minded – When conducting marketing research, keep an open mind and remember that sometimes data doesn’t always tell us everything we need to know. Sometimes it doesn’t give us enough information; other times it gives us too much information!

What Will be your Next Steps After Completing the Market Research?

Once you’ve conducted your research, you should be able to find a few options for taking your business in a new direction. In some cases, that may mean abandoning your original idea and pursuing a new one that you came across during your research. In other cases, it may just mean getting a little more clarity on what direction you’re headed in and how best to proceed. Either way, make sure you take action after completing your market research. That way, if nothing else, you can say with confidence that you did everything possible to ensure success. If you conduct a market research before launching your product or service, you will have answers to these questions:
